Our client is a leading steel fabrication company specialising in structural steelwork and architectural metalwork projects throughout the UK.

Position Overview:

As a Design Manager with our client, you will play a pivotal role in leading our design team to create solutions that meet our clients' requirements. You will oversee the design process from concept to completion, ensuring adherence to project specifications, industry standards, and quality benchmarks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural engineering and design management within the steel fabrication industry, coupled with exceptional leadership and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the design team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure project success.
  • Oversee the planning, prioritisation, and allocation of design resources to meet project deadlines and objectives.
  • Review project requirements, specifications, and drawings to develop comprehensive design solutions.
  • Outline production methods in detail, providing step-by-step descriptions, including the types of equipment and software to be utilised.
  • Generate and assess preliminary sketches, collaborating with the team to ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations, optimising structural integrity and safety.
  • Conduct initial estimates and material calculations for project requirements.
  • Utilise advanced software tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, Advanced Steel) to produce accurate design drawings, models, and documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, architects, and engineers to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Present design proposals, progress updates, and solutions to clients, addressing feedback and ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, fostering trust, transparency, and satisfaction throughout the design process.
  • Implement robust quality control measures to maintain the highest standards of design accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
  • Communicate any process enhancement needs or team upgrades to the Directors for review and implementation.
  • Conduct thorough reviews and evaluations of design deliverables to identify and resolve any discrepancies or issues.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant industry regulations, codes, and standards in all design activities.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a draughtsman or in design management within the steel fabrication industry, with a focus on structural steelwork and architectural metalwork projects.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Tekla Structures) and other design tools.
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles, including load analysis, steel connection design, and fabrication processes.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate team members.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards related to structural steel design and fabrication.
  • Ability to maintain and meet deadlines.
